Today was a fantastic day and easily my best day, so far, as an Ocado delivery driver.
It started as I turned up to work shortly after six o’clock with a [sanitised] pack of my three published paperbacks for a fellow driver who had already paid for the books. She wanted the two novels for her mother and the anthology for her own enjoyment.
I set off on my route: Appleshaw, Sutton Scotney, South Wonston, Alresford, Eastleigh and Southampton.
However, my thirteenth drop was truly THRILLING! I thought that I recognised the name of my customer, yet I couldn’t quite believe it. When I turned up, I was delighted to be greeted by fellow Swanwicker, Allison Symes. She has been following my exploits since I started the job and was equally delighted that I was finally going to be delivering to her today. We both hope that the next time we meet will be on the first day of the Swanwick Writers’ Summer School on 8th August 2020.
Could my day get any better? Not really, but I was very happy that my final customer, who is lucky enough to live close to the berths of the luxury cruise ships in Southampton, gave me an unexpected present. I was interested in one of the products that he’d ordered and asked if I could take a photograph of a bottle of the alcohol free beer that he told me was so good, to act as a reminder so that I might order the same for myself. He told me to take a bottle. How generous is that?
The most exciting part of my round was definitely meeting up with Allison.
Here’s to Swanwick in August!
Note: Permission granted by Allison to reveal her name.
