Andover Parkrun 2014
My name is Lance Greenfield Mitchell.
I was born in the St Pancras borough of London in December, 1955. My father is from Yorkshire, and my mother is from Scotland. I’ve spent most of my life trying to work out if I’m a Londoner, a Yorkshireman or a Scotsman. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m half Yorkshire and half Scots. The place of your birth doesn’t really count.
I am married to Joy and currently live in North West Hampshire. My home city is probably Perth, although it could be Sheffield.
I love to travel. I have visited about 80 countries in my life, and I love to immerse myself in different cultures, languages and cuisines.
The greatest passion in my life is the way that people treat people. Witnessing a great act of kindness brings as many tears to my eyes as witnessing horrible cruelty. Hence my personal motto:
One World, one people – Care for them all

Perhaps I should relate how I arrived at my personal motto at the age of fifteen. It could make for an interesting blog post. Suffice to say, for now, that I was a serial runner-awayer all over the world from an early age. Something that happened when I was exploring a foreign city, revealed the massive chasm between rich and poor in this world, and how people treat people. It had such a huge emotional effect on me that it truly changed my life forever.
Even more in the light of recent events, I wish that the whole population of the world would adopt my motto!

I saw your post on The Commons and thought it better to respond here. I am a fan of a clean, uncluttered theme where all the essentials are there and are easily accessible so I can focus on content. That’s just how this blog is. It’s neat finish feels like I’m in an e-magazine’s website. Consistent with the appearance is the writing style which is very straight-forward. If this blog personality is what you are after, then I’d say you nailed it.

Hi, I liked this and the comments about “home”. I think there is a lot of truth in the saying that “home is where the heart is”. It’s about where you actually feel at home.
80 countries eh? I bet there are some tales of adventure there!
It’s great meeting different people and being able to share time with them. My travelling has been far more limited than your own unfortunately but I do enjoy some of the encounters I have when out and about and only yesterday posted a short blog about it.

Hi Lance, thanks for following my blog. I think by the sound of it we have quite a lot in common. I too am part Scottish, with my other part Malaysian, on my mother’s side. Also I love to write, and travel too, and enjoy learning about, and celebrating different cultures. I love your motto, it sounds like such a simple thing, I just wish more people would follow that philosophy of life.

Funnily enough, when I was very young, I lived near Jessleton, North Borneo, now Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, East Malaysia. I have some very fond memories of those times. I’ll PM you on Goodreads.

I really like your bio. Would love to hear about your travels. My husband and I spent 2 years in West Germany when he was in the army. Took a summer trip across Canada into Alaska in 2001, and a caravan tour from Maine to Newfoundland in 2005. While in Germany I got to spend 3 days, 4 nights in Paris, France, and we took 2 weeks tent-camping around Holland. God has been very good to us. Your philosophy is a good one. God loves all people; unfortunately not everyone loves Him back.

Well, we DO have the same name (except for Mitchell)! You came up on a Google search and thought I’d say hello … Strange we had similar backgrounds (US Navy, information technology, and finishing up in law enforcement). All the best

I was born Lance Greenfield. Mitchell was my step-dad’s name, so I changed to avoid confusion. And then re-introduced Greenfield to my name to avoid further confusion. My author name is Lance Greenfield (look for me on Amazon!)

I love your motto, Lance. And I delight in the sentence, “I am married to Joy…” What a happy thing to say…her name represents wonderfulness, and so in a sense each time you say it you are planting a seed of living in joy. At least that’s how I like to look at it 🙂

I created it in my tiny mind when I was 15 and witnessed a horrific and absolute contrast between rich and poor. Neither party were wealthy by my grandmother’s definition.
I put a bit of the explanation of that event into my second novel, “Knitting Can Walk!”

I totally agree with you about where you are born doesn’t matter a jot! I was born in Coventry, but lived there for about 2 minutes (ok that’s a little exaggerated, but you know what I mean!) Brought up in Yorkshire and lived there for the majority of my life. I’m a true Yorkshire lass and it’s annoyed me all my life that I have to put Coventry down as my place of birth, (nothing against Coventry, by the way, but I don’t know the place at all and don’t have any attachment). Anyway, Really great about me page. Love the motto – wish everybody would adopt it!

If you ever get around to reading “Knitting Can Walk!” you’ll learn the true story behind the reason that I came up with that motto and why I am so passionate about it. The more that I see of this world, the more intense I become about it.

If you want a quick laugh, you might like to read “Golly” on my Titbits page. It describes an incident that happened when I lived in Chelsea Road (S11) when I was about five.

It was nice to meet you at the Parkrun yesterday. I took a look at your writing, i enjoyed Golly. My nan and grandad had one and it used to terrify me, i never liked dolls of any kind! So it was nice to hear of one being someone’s friend.

I liked your amazing Alice tattoos. I’m going to tell my son about them.
